Estiene Chastain and Mart he Chastain, her father and mother ; was p resented for baptism by Mr. Barthelmie dupuy and Mar[the?] dupuy, hi s wife. The parties have declared that this child was born the day an d year above. J, Soblety Cleark.

      French Huguenot Stephen Chastain m. Martha du Puy, the daughter of Bar tholomew du Puy. Their daughter was Mary Magdalene Chastain. She is na med in both her father's will and her mother's will as their daughte r and heir. Her parents died while she was still unmarried and a mino r and she was given over to the custody of her mother's brother John J ames du Puy. Mary Magdalene Chastain married twice, the first time t o James Powell Cocke and the second time to Peter Farrar. The Chastai n Family is the long line of a Huguenot Family.

      Their daughter Mary Chastain married (1) James Powell Cocke and (2) PE TER FARRAR. Mary Magdalene Chastain is mentioned in the wills of bot h of her parents and it is confirmed that she is the same person who m arried James Powell Cocke and Peter Farrar. She was still a minor an d unmarried at the time of her parent's deaths.

      The highest number of blacks is credited to James Cocke, who was a ver y young man, and apparently living (with his Huguenot wife) at Manniki n Town. His list is eight persons; Wm. Salle, five; estate of John Jam es Flournoy, six; John Chastain, five; Mrs. Ann Scott, eight; Mrs. Eli za Bernard, six. On page 104 James Cocke and Mary Magdelaine Chastai n have a son1 born to them in I743-Chas-tain Cocke.
