After 18 months 'hard labor' updating, cleaning, and attaching missing sources we have this newly updated database. If you've checked the old database out, it would be well worth your while to look again. This is as close to 'error free' as possible. However, errors are still possible and please do let me know if you find any. Data is only as good as the quality of the sources.

In some cases, certain facts and conclusions can be disputed or debated by others, but I've made a point of digging as deep as I can and making my own conclusions - and have detailed them in the notes.

Happy genealogy hunting!

LOS ANGELES, Cal., March 26. -- An important capture was effected Saturday morning in this city in the arrest of August Cronkhite, absconding county treasurer of Warren County, Ind., who on January 21, 1893, disappeared with $65,000. Cronkhite was elected county treasurer in 1890 and served three terms. January 21, 1893, it was discovered he was short in his accounts $65,000. He disappeared and no trace could be had of him and the grand jury indicted him. The sheriff of an adjoining county got a clew and located him in Los Angeles. Cronkhite acknowledged he was the person sought and only desired to transact a little business before he was taken back to Indiana on requisition. While in Los Angeles, he invested in real estate and has a large tract of land in Cardena in his wife's name.
