Richard Knight of Newbury, Massachusetts; 1603-1683.

Richard Knight, 12th great grandfather to our children, Erin and Stuart, was born January 14, 1603 in Romsey, Hampshire, England to William Knight (1568-1630) and Elizabeth (Carter) Knight (1571-    ). He was christened June 28, 1607 at 4 years of age in Melksham, Wiltshire, England.

It is documented that Richard Knight immigrated to Newbury, Massachusetts in 1635 (about age 32) from England with his brother John on ‘The James.’

In 1635, soon after arriving in Massachusetts, Richard and his brother John are among those who owned plots of land that had been laid out for the original settlers. (See the plan of lots map below.)

In 1625, Richard Knight and Agnes Coffley were married in Newbury, Massachusetts. (See Knight marriage records below from the publication “US and New England marriages prior to 1700.)

Their children included:

  • Unknown Knight (1626-    )
  • Richard Knight (1627-1627)
  • William Knight (1628-1630)
  • Anna “Anne” Knight (1631-1704)
  • Elizabeth Knight (1633-1667)
  • Richard Knight (1633-    )
  • Rebecca Knight (1643-    )
  • Sarah Knight (1648-1714)

Richard made a living as a merchant and tailor in Newbury and appears to have lived in Massachusetts until 1659, when he appears in documents as the owner of property in Dover, New Hampshire. It is not clear if he lived on this property or remained in Massachusetts the whole time.

Richard prepared his will August 17, 1681 in Newbury and subsequently died on August 4, 1683 at the age of 80 in Newbury. His will was probated September 25 1683 in Salem, Massachusetts. (See the record of his death from a copy of the original document below.)
